Number Puzzle - Involving Circles

Number Puzzle - Problems Involving Circles:

In this type of questions, a figure or a matrix is given in which some numbers are filled according to a rule. A place is left blank or a Question mark is placed. You have to find out a character(a number) from the given possible answers which may be filled in the blank space.

  • In this type of puzzle problems, three circles with numbers outside each circle will be given. In the first two circle, the number inside the circle is written according to a particular relation. The objective is to find the number inside the third circle which follows the same relation as that of the first two circles.
  • These types of problems can be identified with the aid of arithmetic rules.
  • We must apply all the operators of mathematics to find the desired result.
  • Various Types of Relationships:  a, b, c, d are numbers outside the circle, e is the number inside the circle.

    (i) e = a + b + c + d

    (ii) e = a number times (a + b + c + d)

    (iii) e = frac{(a+b+c+d)}{a;number}

    (iv) e = a number times (abcd)

    (v) e = frac{(abcd)}{a;number}

    (vi) e=sqrt{(a+b+c+d)times 2}

    (vii) e=frac{sqrt{a+b+c+d}}{2}

    (i) e = a number times (sqrt{a}+sqrt{b}+sqrt{c}+sqrt{d})

    (ii) e=frac{sqrt{a}+sqrt{b}+sqrt{c}+sqrt{d}}{a;number}

    (iii) e = a number times (sqrt{a}times sqrt{b}times sqrt{c}times sqrt{d})

    (iv) e = a number times (a^{2}+b^{2}+c^{2}+d^{2})

    (v) e=frac{(a^{2}+b^{2}+c^{2}+d^{2})}{a;number}

    (vi) e=frac{(a+b+c+d)^{2}}{a;number}

    (vii) e=(ac-bd)or(bd-ac)

    (viii) e=(ac+bd)times a;number

    (ix) e=frac{(ac+bd)}{a;number}

    Let us try some examples.

    Example : Which number replaces the question mark (?)

    A. 6

    B. 3

    C. 16

    D. 10

    Answer : A

    Explanation : In each circle, double the numbers on the left hand side and put the result in the opposite segment on the right hand side.

    On the basis of this logic,

    ? x 2 = 12 and so ? = 6.

    Example : Find the missing number

    A. 2

    B. 1

    C. 5

    D. 6

    Explanation : Multiply the numbers of the bottom of the circle. Add numbers on the top part of the corcle. Subtract them to get the answer. In the question circle, multiply 13 with 4 to get 52. Add 23 and 28 to get 51. Subtract 51 from 52 to get 1, which is the answer.
